Gorilla beringei, known as the Eastern Gorilla, inhabits the forests of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. These gentle giants are primarily herbivorous, living in social groups led by a dominant silverback. They possess remarkable strength, a keen sense of family, and are critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.

Gorilla beringei, also known as the Eastern Gorilla, is predominantly found in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, southwestern Uganda, and Rwanda. The species is divided into two subspecies: the Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), located in the Virunga Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), found in the lowland tropical forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Mountain Gorilla inhabits montane and submontane forests at elevations ranging from 1,100 to 4,500 meters. These areas are characterized by dense vegetation, cool temperatures, and frequent mist and rain. The Eastern Lowland Gorilla, on the other hand, is found in lowland tropical forests, which are warm and humid, with dense vegetation and a variety of fruiting trees.

Gorilla beringei primarily occupies the role of herbivores and frugivores in their ecosystems, consuming a diet rich in leaves, stems, bark, and fruits. They play a crucial role in seed dispersal, contributing to forest regeneration and biodiversity. The varying altitudes and forest types they inhabit require adaptations to different vegetation types and food availability.
